Federal Opposition Formally Supports Weekend Workers

Today, the Federal Opposition has taken the unusual step of making a submission to the Fair Work Commission calling for existing weekend rates to remain in place.

This is great news for hundreds of thousands of weekend workers.

“The Federal Opposition submits that penalty rates continue to be a fundamental part of a strong safety net for Australian workers, enabling low income workers and workers in highly casualised industries to share in the nation’s economic prosperity,” the submission said.

Two of Australia’s biggest unions, United Voice and the SDA, the unions for retail, fast-food and hospitality workers, today welcomed the Federal ALP’s submission, saying it shows the Opposition understands the importance of penalty rates for Australian workers.
